Summer is a dangerous time for dogs. When owners leave their furry pals in a parked car and forget to open a window, the consequences can be severe—and often fatal.

That was very nearly the case for Max, a chocolate Lab from Allentown, Pennsylvania. His owner, Donna Gardner, took him out in her car while she was running errands on a 90-degree day, But when she arrived home, she forgot that Max was still in the car, and went inside to unload her packages, with the poor dog trapped in the awful heat.

An hour after returning home, Gardner heard a honk coming from her car. She looked outside, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. She heard another honk, and went over to her car. There, she found Max sitting in the front seat, leaning on the wheel.

Luckily, Gardner got to Max in the nick of time. She pulled him out of the hot car, cooled him down with wet rags, and drove him to the animal hospital. He made a full recovery.

Even so, Max’s story serves as a cautionary tale—please be careful with your pets this summer!
