MEDCottage’s Granny Pods Help Families Keep Elderly Just Close Enough

MEDCottage's mobile housing units for the elderly offer an in-between solution for families.

A MEDCottage

Your aging mother’s having vision problems, and is no longer fit to live independently—but you don’t have room for her to move into your house. The solution? A “granny pod.”

MEDCottages, nicknamed “granny pods,” are an in-between option when you want to keep a loved one safe under a watchful eye, but can’t (or would rather not) ask her to actually move into your home. The portable structures are miniature mobile homes equipped with video monitors, safety lighting, and body monitoring systems that can keep you updated on when Mom takes her meds.

The structures rent for $2,000 a month: not exactly cheap, but for most families, it’s more affordable than covering the cost of a nursing home. And as far as your aging relative goes, getting to hold onto that sense of independence—while still being a stone’s throw away from help—is absolutely priceless.
