Actress Michelle Williams recently launched a non-profit that provides free yoga classes and childcare for single mothers.
Yoga is a proven way to relieve stress—and no one has greater potential to get stressed out than a single mother. Unfortunately, most single moms don’t have the money to pony up for a babysitter every time they want to get their omm on, so they wind up missing out on this calming and stabilizing ritual and watching The Wiggles for the thousandth time instead.
Actress Michelle Williams found comfort in yoga after losing her former partner, Heath Ledger.
“Yoga gave me relief like nothing else; it made be a better person and a better mother,” she told Marie Claire. “I could come back to my daughter anew. And then I started to think about how expensive it is to get a babysitter to take a yoga class, which makes it out of reach for so many women.”
Now, she wants to share the benefits of the exercise with others who may not have the opportunity to try it under ordinary circumstances. So she’s founded a non-profit called Yoga for Single Moms. The center offers free yoga classes to single mothers, as well as free childcare in an adjacent room. The non-profit is launching a pilot program in Boston this spring, but plans to provide free classes and childcare facilities in yoga centers all over the country in the coming years.
