Tracy Woodhouse and Graham Peck of Scarborough, England wanted a nice home without spending a fortune. So they converted a public toilet into a stunning cottage.
Think the home transformations on Extreme Home Makeover are pretty jaw-dropping? Well, Ty Pennington and his team have got nothing on British couple Tracy Woodhouse and Graham Peck, who created a stunning cliffside beach house from a former public toilet.
The building in Scarborough, England had been used as a bathroom for beach visitors for over a century, but when it went up for lease five years ago, the couple had a crazy idea: what if they converted it into a home?
Fortunately, the city council got behind their plan, and the couple purchased the seven-year lease for £15,000, followed by £1,800 a year payments.
Next came the tough part: turning the filthy loo into a luxurious home. Woodhouse and Peck did much of the dirty work themselves, demolishing the former men’s and ladies’ rooms to create a gourmet kitchen, lounge, master bedroom, and a bathroom (sans cubicles).
The couple’s beachside cottage still attracts plenty of attention: “We can be watching TV or washing the dishes and suddenly a face will peer through the window,” Peck told the Daily Mail. “I don’t know who’s more surprised, them or us.”
They also sometimes get people knocking on their door—but it’s not to ask about using the bathroom. It’s to ask about buying the home. “We’ve received two or three offers already,” said Peck.
