On Monday, three separate women in Rochester, New York, received help delivering their babies from local firefighters.
Firefighters are expected to be prepared for all sorts of emergencies - rescuing kittens stuck in treetops, helping drivers out of wrecked cars, and yes, even putting out a flame every now and then. But three firefighters of Rochester, New York, woke up to surprisingly similar emergencies on Monday morning: In three separate emergencies, firefighters were called upon to assist pregnant women in labor with their journey to the hospital.
The strangest part? None of the women could wait until entering the hospital before giving birth, so the three firefighters each ended up delivering a baby.
Although firefighters are trained in delivering infants, it’s not exactly a standard part of their operation - one of the firefighters, Alex Klimchuck, said that this was his very first birth in 10 years as a firefighter and EMT. Nonetheless, he stood up to the challenge like a champ: “It’s kind of wild — it’s amazing,” he told the Democrat and Chronicle.
All three infants were born without incident, and by the time each car arrived at the hospital, the only things left to do were fill out the birth certificates and clean off the babies.
While the firefighters are happy to get back to their normal duties, the pregnant women of Rochester must be pleased to know that they can count on 911 when their waters break. Who needs a hospital when you’ve got a mobile delivery center?
