The Ants Go Marching

Ever wonder why you'll often see ants walking by your picnic with a giant leaf attached to its back? Meet the leafcutter ant.

Ants are fascinating and sometimes destructive creatures. These leafcutter ants can destroy a tree's vegetation in just hours, snagging the green goods to strengthen the nest for their colony of more than 5 million friends and family. With the ability to carry more than five times their own body weight, these little guys will travel up to five metres to find the perfect leaves to haul back and hand over to the farmer ants to furtilize their fungus garden. Oh, and did we mention that a leafcutter ant nest can get up to the size of a small car? Sweet dreams!
